Last call for submissions! : carte blanche 15 →
A reminder to all my cartoonist and doodling freinds, the submissions deadline for Issue #15 of carte blanche is coming up soon! March 1st, so you’ve got about half a month to go. There is more than one way to tell a story. Carte Blanche would like to know how you would! There’s no theme for this issue, it’s wide open. There is a small honorarium, and you retain all rights to your work....

Lisbeth Salander needs no one’s permission.
Warning! spoilers! I just watched the new The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s a good film on it’s own. If there was nothing to measure it against i’d say not too shabby. 4 out of 6? But there is something to measure it against. A book and a movie as we know. Compared to the Swedish film version, I was not happy about the story changes made by David Fincher. They weakened the characters....

Mark Sable: GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES REFERENCE →
marksable: While you’re waiting for Issue 4 of Graveyard of Empires, I thought I would share some of the research that goes into the book. At some point I’m going to compile a bibliography of all the books, films etc. that Paul and I used for Graveyard - maybe in the last issue, if we have room (it’s looking…

Fiona Staples challenges mainstream comics with...
Cros-post from sequential It’s not hard to find tits in mainstream comics. Lots and lots of big, round, almost nude tits. On the covers, in the pages, everywhere. Seldom being used in their primary biological function – feeding babies – but mostly and exploitatively, in their secondary sexual context as eye-grabbers. Attention-getters. Fun bags! Bursting out, all over the place, barely...

Brian Wood on digital vs brick and mortar:...
Everyone is bleeding - The Beat commenting on Woods response to the Dark Horse vs. retailers clash over pricing of simultaneous digital releases. Problem is…we do all love our retailer friends but they haven’t been able to grow the market for comics. That’s a fact. I love each and everyone of them but if things had been going well DC and Marvel wouldn’t have broken the glass on their last ditch...

JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE @ MAPLE LEAF GARDENS PT 2
The second roll of photos of a historic Jimi Hendrix show, the night of May 3, 1969 at Maple Leaf Gardens. There’s been a fair bit of interest in prints of some kind, I’m working on a couple of solutions, and should have something to present with the 3rd Roll of film from the show. For a bit of back story for this show, check out the first roll post.

DC Women Kicking Ass: DC Comics SDCC panels:... →
Some details about confrontations on SDCC panels here… dcwomenkickingass: The DC Comics panels at SDCC have been filled with what I being told are uncomfortable and awkward moments around the issues of female creators and characters. Much of this is being driven by a woman attending the DC panels with her young daughter. From people I’ve spoken to the daughter is a…

Back in 1979 Lionel Douglas crashed a motorcycle he was testing. Unlike many others he trashed he didn’t walk away that time. In his short life, aside from being my father he also did his best to live up to his name and sign [leo]. There’s been past efforts to publish his work, but they remain obscure. Always felt it was down to me to do it now. I’ve had his papers for some...
